Compton Gardens

Mission

To create a peaceful, enjoyable and enlightening experience of nature for the Northwest Arkansas community by continuing the efforts of the late Dr. Neil Compton to promote and conserve the natural environment of Arkansas through preservation and further development of the Compton/Putman property and its collection of trees, shrubs, and native plants.

This will be accomplished through:

Research and Design
To base the development of the site on exposing and enhancing its best characteristics, including: surveying the property; identifying, mapping and developing a program to retain the existing plantings; and planning for access and development of as many types of habitats and Northwest Arkansas plant species as the site will permit.

To open up the opportunity to see the drama of natural phenomena at work on the site and relate its natural beauty to design, craftsmanship, and the arts in general.

Education
To increase awareness of and appreciation of the important role of the natural environment of Northwest Arkansas in the lives of its residents through the development and interpretation of nature trails, guided and self-guided tours and lectures on the important facets of that environment.

Community Service
To make available the site for schools, community groups and organizations having an interest in the above.

Commemoration
To commemorate the role of Dr. Compton and also Laurene Compton and Edna Putman in preserving the natural environment and their service within the community through an exhibit depicting memories of events and relationships important to those roles.
